The Wind Carries the News
Wind, rain, tram lights and a glowing café combine in one of the most atmospheric paintings in the collection.
View artwork →This collection brings together my paintings of streets transformed by weather: umbrellas in the wind, reflections on wet pavements, glowing café windows and the quiet drama of cities after rain. Some are romantic, some nostalgic and some simply atmospheric, but all of them are rooted in the idea that rain can turn an everyday street into a story.
One of my most narrative rain paintings, this scene combines wind, scattered newspapers, tram lights and the warmth of a café interior. It sits at the centre of this collection because it brings together so many of the elements that interest me: movement, atmosphere and the suggestion of a story unfolding.

A nostalgic Aberdeen subject where architecture, illumination and evening atmosphere come together in a distinctly cinematic way.

A more intimate rain painting in which the umbrella shelters two figures and turns the city into a setting for romance.

One of the strongest and most dramatic works in the group, with headlights cutting through heavy rain behind a lone figure.

A classic Gordon Bruce rain subject: wet streets, a red accent and a pair of figures held together by the weather.

The glow from the café windows gives this painting its emotional centre and makes it one of the key atmospheric works behind this whole page.
Read the story →Rain also lets you move away from straightforward topography and into mood: Paris in deep blue, autumn under an umbrella, and a cinematic sense of place.
A noir-inspired Paris scene with a couple, a vintage car and the Eiffel Tower, full of glamour, mystery and rain-soaked romance.

A quieter variation on the theme, using seasonal colour and weather to create a reflective mood rather than a bustling city drama.

I am less interested in simply recording a place than in capturing how it feels: the damp air, the glow of shop lights, the pattern of umbrellas and the sense that something has just happened — or is about to. Rain creates mood, and mood creates narrative.
