Grandma Moses
Grandma Moses was an American folk artist best known for her detailed, naive-style paintings of rural scenes. Born in 1860, Anna Mary Robertson Moses developed a love for painting late in life, at the age of 78. Though she had never received any formal art training, her vivid images soon became very popular and highly sought after by art collectors. Grandma Moses is most renowned for her nostalgic depictions of farmlands and rolling hills during America’s simpler times. Many of her works focus on rural family activities like quilting bees, harvesting crops and school children going off to class. The distinctive primitive quality of Grandma Moses' artwork has made it stand out over the years, with its limited use of a perspective, unique combination of colours and large areas left unfinished or unpainted in her pieces. By drawing upon her memories and experience living in upstate New York during the 19th century, Grandma Moses was able to capture a charmingly simple way of life that can still be appreciated today. Her pieces continue to bring delight to admirers all around the world.
