Commissioning a painting
A commission begins with a conversation. These answers explain how we can turn an idea, memory or favourite place into an original oil painting.
How does a painting commission begin?
Send me a brief description of your idea, along with any preferred size, reference photographs and approximate timescale. I will consider the subject and contact you to discuss what is possible. The composition, price and payment arrangements are agreed before painting begins.
What subjects can you paint?
I welcome enquiries about landscapes, favourite places, city scenes, portraits, figures and imaginative narrative paintings. My work is especially suited to scenes with atmosphere, colour and a strong sense of story.
How much does a commission cost?
The price depends on the canvas size, number of figures, complexity and amount of detail involved. After discussing your idea, I will provide an individual quotation so you can decide without obligation.
Do I need good reference photographs?
Clear photographs are helpful, particularly for portraits, buildings and specific locations. They do not need to be professional. Several photographs showing different details can often be more useful than a single image. Please only provide photographs you have permission to use.
Can you create something inspired by a sold painting?
You are welcome to mention a sold work that you particularly like. I would create a new interpretation rather than an exact copy, allowing your painting to remain original while carrying a similar mood, subject or colour atmosphere.
How long does a commission take?
Timescales vary according to the painting’s size and complexity, my current studio schedule and the drying time required for oils. If the work is intended for a birthday, anniversary or another date, please mention this as early as possible.

What is the difference between an original and a print?
An original is the unique oil painting created by hand on canvas. A print or printed canvas is a reproduction of an existing artwork and may be offered in several formats or sizes, making it a more accessible way to enjoy the image.
Are paintings sold framed?
Framing varies from one artwork to another, so please check the individual product description. If the information is unclear or you would like advice about displaying a particular work, contact me before ordering.

How is delivery arranged?
The available delivery method and cost depend on the size, format and destination. Shop orders show the applicable options during checkout. Delivery arrangements for commissions are discussed and confirmed with the quotation.
Can artwork be ordered internationally?
Many items can be ordered from outside the United Kingdom. Availability, shipping cost and any destination restrictions depend on the product and address, so check the shop checkout or contact me about a particular original painting.
How should I care for an oil painting?
Display the painting away from persistent direct sunlight, damp conditions and strong heat. Dust gently with a clean, soft, dry cloth and avoid household cleaning products. Seek professional advice before attempting any repair or deeper cleaning.
Notice what stays with you
The right painting is often the one you return to after browsing. Subject matters, but mood, colour and personal association can be even more important.
Simple ideas are enough
You do not need a finished composition in mind. A place, memory, photograph or colour atmosphere is enough to begin a commission conversation.
