I create colourful oil paintings filled with atmosphere, memory and story from my home city of Aberdeen, Scotland.
A world you can step into
I’m Gordon Bruce, an oil painter based in Aberdeen. I am drawn to subjects that suggest a story: a figure beneath a glowing streetlamp, a cottage beneath an enormous Scottish sky, reflections moving across a Venetian canal or a familiar character entering an imagined world.
My inspiration comes from many places—Scotland’s landscape and changing weather, city streets, the sea, literature, classic cinema and the work of the Old Masters. Although the subjects vary, colour and atmosphere connect them all.
I want each painting to offer more than a record of a place. My aim is to capture the feeling of being there and leave enough mystery for viewers to bring their own memories and stories to the scene.

From dramatic skies and rain-soaked streets to literary characters, cinema, romance and playful folk landscapes, each subject becomes part of the same colourful world.
Colour, contrast and imagination
I build each composition through rich oil colour and carefully placed detail. Glowing windows, changing skies and reflections lead the eye through the scene and establish its mood. The finished painting balances observation with imagination rather than reproducing a place mechanically.
